As a librarian at GVSU, I had the opportunity to work under two different portfolios. In Fall 2017, I worked with the School of Communication; Music, Dance, Theater; Film and Video; and Photography. In Winter 2018, I worked with the School of Business. In a lot of ways, the job was very similar, but, as the departments worked very differently, there was a large learning curve when I stepped into the second role.
As an adjunct librarian, I was tasked only with work that fell under the “Professional Responsibilities” portion of the full job description for a liaison. These responsibilities included providing library instruction, managing collections, consulting with faculty and students on their research and instructional needs, and participating in library faculty meetings.
However, when opportunities arose, I took advantage of it. For example, I had the opportunity to take on a researcher role for a scholarly project one of our faculty members was working on. Another example is that I was fully supported when I came up with a research and presentation idea. As a result, I will be completing my first professional, peer-reviewed presentation in May.
